Welcome to my ePortfolio!
My name is Lennie Faith Mangayam. I am from Hawai'i, which I consider to be one of the most ethnic and diverse areas in the world. Growing up in this multicultural environment exposed me to different languages, cultures, and traditions, and enabled me to easily connect with other people.
One of my most memorable and shaping experiences occurred after my freshman year in college. I went on a trip that forever altered my views of the world, society, and of myself. I traveled with a group to South East Asia, where we reached out to rural communities, hosting summer camps for kids. It was here that I witnessed a society longing to learn; I interacted with children not guaranteed an education, and through them, found my passion to become a teacher. I discovered that I could best relate to children. After returning to the states, I decided to go back to school and received my B.A. degree in Second Language Studies and Certificate in Peace Studies from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
Throughout my college experience, I volunteered as an ELL tutor at the Institute for Human Services (homeless shelter for women and families) and continued to be fascinated with language learning. I then developed an interest in language-based learning differences in young learners. I am now an Elementary School Teacher at a private school and adore each of my little learners.
"I put the relation of a fine teacher to a student just below the relation of a mother to a son." - Thomas Wolfe
